Finding time to blog

By now you are well on your way to setting up your family blog. Sure, it will take time to tweak it and get it to look, feel, and sound just like you want it to, but you might have even made your first post. Kudos if that is the case!

If you are still on the fence about starting a blog, I understand. One of the biggest reasons holding most parents back from starting a blog is finding the time to write and maintain their site. I get this. We are all busy parents with diapers to change, tears to wipe, sticky fingers to clean, and toys to pick up. But trust me, there is time to blog in all that chaos!

Allow me to introduce you to The Daily Post at WordPress.com, where you will find abundant tips, inspiration, and information about the blogging scene. Just about the time I sat down to write this piece for MFB, the post I am about to share popped up in my reader and said exactly what I wanted to say about finding time to blog.

Nicola Baird shares 5 Tips for Super-Busy Bloggers – Especially Mums and Dads. She’s British so she’s a Mum ;)

With no further ado here are her tips and a link to the full article on her blog if you are interested in reading more.

Jot down ideas in a notebook. To avoid forgetting post gems, and to spark ideas about what to photograph, carry a notebook everywhere.  I dodge writer’s block by ear-wigging conversations (easy on public transport or at the shops), working out a solution to a problem that makes me angry, or sharing my feelings about the hot parenting news topic (e.g., tiger mums, education, alcohol).
Post lists. Ever wonder why so many blog posts offer the top 3, 5, or 7 ways to do something? Perhaps it’s because most time-starved parents get interrupted before reaching #10! Luckily, readers love lists (well, I do).
Establish once-a-week themes. If photos are your thing, try offering a regular Silent Sunday where you just post a great photo, no need for a caption. Confident cooks could run a Foodie Tuesday with your take on a seasonal recipe, or a food diary of what your child ate (or rejected) that day. Mummy bloggers love posts about thrifty and time-saving tips, such as making and sourcing Christmas gifts, Diwali decorations, or Thanksgiving dinner. Linking to other blogs diarying the same festive countdown can grow your blog’s followers and may make you blogger friends.
Keep it positive, please. Only moan if it’s funny. Every rule can be broken, so it’s OK to post a raw moan of despair occasionally – but ideally less than one a month. On the other hand, we could get sick of your faultless family, so write about your mistakes, too. For instance if you’d left your eight-year-old daughter behind in a pub as British PM David Cameron did. Mistakes are the posts readers empathize with…or get outraged about. They make the comments flow.
Be super flexible. Some people manage to run babies and children on schedules – but most of us don’t. If you want to post or add tags, but your child is awake and cannot be distracted by food or Angry Birds, re-schedule.
All helpful and appropriate tips. After a year of blogging I can attest to this wisdom. I keep a notebook near my computer and take it with me if we are on a trip or doing something special so I can jot down any ideas that come to mind for my blog.

I also post lists on my blog. I just started a weekly column-type post called List of seven on Sunday. It’s so much easier and more interesting to post a list of snippets instead of one long story. Blogs are not meant to be novels and most people don’t read all the way to the end if you get too long-winded. Lists are great to keep the flow quick and easy to read. Inserting graphics and pictures will break up the text, making it even easier to read.

For parent bloggers, writing about parental blunders is half the fun. Don’t be afraid to disclose your child had a huge melt down at the park and then you locked your keys in the car. You want your readers to be able to relate to you, and while we love hearing about the seamless adventures in your life, the mishaps are share-worthy, too.

Flexibility is definitely key. I try to keep three or four drafts in my dashboard that I can start/stop working on when I find time. And my weekly list is always ongoing, which is a constant as well as the type of post that allows for interruptions. Don’t fret if it takes you a few days or weeks to finalize a post. Just keep on writing and publishing and in no time you will have a collection of posts to treasure for years to come.

So You Want to Start A Blog

As of just a few years ago, a blog was something we sometimes heard about, but really did not understand what in the world it was. If you are close to my age, there are so many things now adays that you wonder what in the world it is. The good news is that you can teach old dogs new tricks, and folks, it is great fun.

Everyone who has experienced life can start a blog at any age. If you have a hobby, an interest, expertise that you should share, a blog is a great way to do that. There are lots of ways to do that. There are sites where you can host your blog for free, and others that do have a cost associated with them. The free sites like Typepad and Blogger are great if you just want a personal site where you want to just share your personal ideas and thoughts.

Do you need WordPress.com or WordPress.org?

If you want to build a business, in my opinion, WordPress is the way to go. You need to understand that there are two versions of WordPress. WordPress.com is a great solution for someone who wants to have a personal blog. If you want to build your business, you want WordPress.org. The .com version is free, but has limited capability and versitility, the .org has a small expensed associated with it, but it is minimal. Both versions are free to use, but if you chose the .org version, you will have to invest in your domain name(under $10 per year) as well as hosting (about $7 per mo).

Remember the days of paying $1500+ for a website and monthly fees to a webmaster? Well, that was then, WordPress has changed all that. You don’t  need a lot of knowledge of computer languages, and once you get the hang of it, it is pretty easy to use.

I never would have believed that I would ever manage my own website, much less build my own. If I can do it, you can too. If you don’t want to take the time to learn all that, but just want a crash basic course, I can sure help you with that. Please feel free to ask questions, and I will do my best to help.

Where to find ideas for your blog

Most experts that I know of suggest that you make blogging a priority if you are starting an online business. The problem many new bloggers face is trying to come up with ideas for content for the blog. It might seem like a daunting task, and I will admit that there are days when I sit at the computer and struggle with writers block. Sometimes you just have to walk away and go for a walk, get some exercise, pray, go shopping, enjoy a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Often just that break will give you some inspirations.

Keeping up with all the industry news in your niche is one way to come up with content. If you have a gmail account with Google, you can set up Google alerts and everytime Google finds something published about the keyword you set, they will send an alert to your gmail account. You will be surprised how many ideas that will provide.

Inspiration might be as close as a magazine rack.

Go to a place where they have a large display of magazines. If your topic is something that there would found in a magazine, you can pick up a copy and peruse it for ideas. Try and think of new twists around your topic. If there are industry trade publications, those can be gold. If there is a particular magazine that gives you great ideas, you might want to get a subscription. You might find a great deal at an online subscription site like Maghound.

You can also invite other people to guest publish on your blog. If they specialize in something that is a natural compliment to what you do, it is a great way to get content as well as exposure to followers of that person. A lot of time reciprosity comes into play and you will be asked to guest bolg for them as well. That is a great scenario.

Blogging can be audio and video too

If you aren’t in the mood to write, you can record your blog, do a screencast, or use a video. You can go to YouTube and find interesting or  pertinent videos and use them. Creating your own video is super easy with a flip camera. All you do is point and click (so to speak) and plug it into your computer. Once it is loaded on your computer, going to YouTube is a breeze and it is a blast to boot! I will wite a post about how to put a video on your site in the near future. Keep an eye on the Help Using WordPress section of my site.

Continuing education is a great place to get lots of idea for blogs. As you learn new things, you will have lots of potential content. I suggest that you just buy a small pocket notebook that you carry with you, because you never know when you will get ideas. I don’t know about you, but I really have to write things down, or later I will be racking my brain trying to remember. You sort of have to get back in the kindergarten mindset and let your curiosity loose. If you are my age, it is possible it has been pent up for awhile,

Free Blog Set Up

If you don’t know how to set up a blog, I am happy to tell you that since I enjoy doing that, I have decided to offer free blog set up. Yes, you read that right As I have talked to more and more people who are interested in working online, one of the biggest stumbling blocks seems to be actually setting up a WordPress blog.
I have written quite a few posts here about it to try and help those people who are ready to jump in and just give it the old college try. I also know that there are lots of others who are chomping at the bit to get started and simply don’t care to learn how to do that, they just want to sit down and get to work sharing what they are passionate about.

Some baby boomers are asking how to set up a blog
I am having a blast with my website, and I really want my fellow boomers to feel empowered to tell your story, share your experience, teach others, make new friends and yes, build your retirement career. WordPress make it so easy for each of us to have a website, and the cost these days is so managable. You can buy a domain name and pay around $10 a year. Hosting with a good webhost is around $6 a month, yep, equivilent to a latte and a muffin a month, who can’t live without that?
I remember having dinner long ago with a woman who I considered an “old lady”. I was probably in my twenties at the time. You know you thought the same thing at that age. Anyway, she made a statement that I have never forgotten. She said she would love to be young again, but not if it meant she would have to erase everything she had already learned in her life. I thought that was a very odd thing to say at the time, but I really understand it now.
You know when your kids are growing up, in their eyes you go from the “end all be all” to being the dumbest person on the planet. Then miraculously, when they have their own kids, suddenly you regain your status. The really great thing is that your grandkids think you are pretty smart. Well folks, your kids and your grandkids are on the internet, and that is where you will connect with them. Not only that, women over fifty are the second fastest demographic on Facebook.
Technology is where it is at
Like it or not, if you don’t want the world to pass you by, you have to get with the program. Seriously, don’t be timid, come on in, the waters fine! Apple has it figured out, they are catering to the boomer generation and with good reason. We are a huge market, and some of us even have a little moola to spend!
Now is the perfect time for you to get going, and WordPress makes it so easy. Okay, there is a little learning curve, but I am building a lot of content to help you along, and you can always ask a question. If I don’t know the answer, and I may not, I will try and find someone who does.
Are You Wondering How to Set up a Blog for a Life Success Coaching Business
Who better than someone with the life experience of a baby boomer could successfully set up that type of business? The problem is that although our life experience positions us well for that, the thought of setting up a blog bogs us down. WordPress can be the perfect solution.
I have a friend who has an autistic son. She is doing an amazing job, and is itching to share all she has learned through the years with younger moms who are struggling with how to best care for their autistic child. The problem she faced was she was too busy learning how best to help her son, and although she wants to be online, she did not have the time to learn how to get started.
I know a psychologist who has a ton of great information to share with the world, but has little interest or time to learn the nuts and bolts of setting up WordPress. It is really easy, but she just wants it put in place so she can blog and take care of her clients. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
How the Free Blog Set Up Offer Works
You may wonder why I am willing to make that offer. First and foremost, I really do want you to share your gifts and talents with the world. It really is a sad thing to me when one of my peers says they can’t learn this technology stuff.  I just think that some people are afraid to try. I really believe that once you get the hang of it, you will enjoy it.The only thing I will ask in return is that you click on the link for the hosting company I use. There are several reasons for that.
One is that they are a great company that offers unlimited domains for one price.
They are also really helpful if you have a problem.
A biggie is that they use what is called a Cpanel, and that makes managing your website easier
They give you unlimited email accounts
They offer an anytime money back guarantee
When you click on the link I provided, Bluehost will pay me a commission fee, but it won’t cost you anything extra. In addition, they will let you register your first domain for free! It is truly a win /win situation. You will get a free blog set up and ready to go. Not only will I upload WordPress for you, but I will also add some of the basic pluggins that you will need.

Why start a family blog?

You may be asking yourself “Why start a family blog?” Starting a blog is both a purposeful and enduring pursuit. If you are like most parents you realize how fleeting time can be when it comes to how fast your children grow up.  I remember when my son turned one and I thought, “how did that happen?!” I started blogging when he was about six months old, and I am so glad I did. One day I know I will enjoy looking back on some of his special moments, and I am certain he will, too.

Among the many reasons why to start a family blog, below are five main reasons you should consider:

1. To preserve memories over time.

This is arguably the most important reason to start a blog. In an era of digital photography and social media, we are constantly documenting and archiving our lives on the Internet. Starting a blog is a place for you to house and showcase your best work and most precious memories in one central place. A blog is a small corner of the web where you can personalize your site, add your own style, and organize all of your thoughts, stories, and pictures. Your family and friends will love reading about your adventures, and you yourself will love looking back at all your stories.

2. To stay connected with family and friends across the miles.

No longer are we living in a world where Grandma and Grandpa always live right down the street. Families are often scattered across the country and sometimes, as in my case, across the ocean in a completely different country. Blogging is a way to bridge the gap across the miles and stay connected in an otherwise expansive world. My in-laws live in Germany so we only get to see them in person about twice per year. In addition to video chatting with them, they follow my blog to stay connected with us. They love reading stories about our son and looking at pictures at the things we have done and the places we have been. If you, too, find yourself with family and friends scattered across the world, encourage them to email subscribe to your blog. You can even interact through comments and discussions.

3. To join a community of family bloggers like you.

Blogging is all the rage. People blog about anything from food to gardening to exercise to books to travel to photography and more. Joining a growing community of family bloggers like you will help you stay inspired and connect with others who are going through the same things as you. 3 AM feedings? Potty-training anyone? You will feel so refreshed to see and read about other parents adventures that before you know it you may even be joining or starting a writing group with fellow parent bloggers. Blogging is a great way to meet people with similar interests and life experiences as you, as well as learn and obtain new blogging ideas from people with differing perspectives. No matter what your objective is you will surely be informed, most definitely entertained, and at times maybe even persuaded by other family bloggers.

4. To allow for self expression and creative passion.

Once you set up a blog it is your creative space to showcase however you want. You can customize your layout and write a description that summarizes your blog. The best part is, you get to make all the rules. A blog is a small corner of the Net that is all yours. There are no deadlines (unless you want/create them for yourself), no grammar police, and no pressure when it comes to blogging. Although I do advise you to proofread and use some form of comprehensible writing style. You want your blog to be easy to read, which will keep readers coming back and increase the number of followers you have. Other than that, have fun and be you!

5. To gain personal fulfillment.

Once you gain a few followers and start receiving comments you will discover that others enjoy reading the content and looking at the pictures you included in your posts just as much as you enjoyed creating the stories. You will soon be a blogging machine, wanting to preserve and capture as many special moments as possible. Writing a blog will make you feel productive, purposeful, and allow you to tap into creativity you never knew you had. The longer you blog, the more fulfilling it becomes because not only do you have content to look back on, but most likely you are gaining more followers thus motivating you to write more posts. Blogging is a positive and self-fulfilling outlet that will allow you to find enjoyment in an otherwise crazy, nonstop world. Taking just a few hours each week to simply create posts, reflect on past posts, and enjoy reading other family blogs is sure to bring you joy.

Bloggers Need Cheerleaders Too

For those who are new to the blog scene, there are lots of things to learn. It is easy to get frustrated when there are so many details involved. You have to learn about keyword research, what is it, how do you do it? You have to learn how to use WordPress and that is a huge challenge for a lot of us. You need to understand the basics of SEO, linking, Social Media, Marketing etc., etc., etc..

Successful Bloggers Have a Plan

If you are a baby boomer, the first paragraph may contain some terms you aren’t familiar with, same goes for any beginner blogger who is just trying to get something up and running. I was the same way with my first blog. I had people giving me advice all over the net, and I would just jump in and try this and that. If that is happening to you, STOP IT.

Just because this may all be new to you, if you don’t have a plan to follow with logical steps to implement, you will waste a huge amount of time and money. I am here to tell ya, been there, done that. I would find someone who sounded good, and they had some trick that if I did this or that, my traffic and sales would skyrocket. Yeah right. Money went down the drain, and huge blocks of time were wasted.

I finally made a resolution to get focused, buckle down to identify who I would focus on and what I have to offer. That is called identifying your niche in “industry speak”. In my opinion, that was pretty tough. I joined groups, did brainstorming, spent a lot of money on coaches, took classes, spent countless  hours  reading and doing research, watching tutorials and  more. I hope I can help make the process a little simpler for you.

Blueprint for your blogs foundation

Remember I mentioned logical steps. Well, we are all adults and have common sense. Businesses like buildings have foundations, and a good foundation is critical to both. I am going to present a progression of steps to follow, and each will require some work on your part to put into action.

It all starts with you, your passions, experience, and interest. I don’t know your belief system, but I am a Christian, and truly believe we were all given a set of talents and gifts to equip us to accomplish some things during our stay on this planet. If you are a baby boomer who is still trying to decide what you want to be when you grow up, it is time to kick it into high gear. This is like going to bootcamp.

I don’t want to keep you too much longer today, you have work to do. (This makes me feel like I should start putting the notes on the chalkboard.) There simply is no time to waste. Here are the first blocks for your blogs foundation.

Start with you, decide your focus. What are your passions, what have you always wanted to do? If you have a ton of experience, do you want to use that for your foundation? Would you rather learn a lot about something you love and then share it?
Give yourself permission to be creative here. You have had to do things required for a job all your life. This is your chance to blossom. In your gut, what have you dreamed of doing? Is it feasible, you can find out, but for now, jot all your ideas down, ask those who know you well to help you brainstorm.
Plan your time, how much of it can you dedicate to each task? In the beginning, it may be that you have to allocate all of it to understanding what you really want to target. It is easy to get caught up in a loop and not make any progress , so you have to set a serious time frame. I want you to develop a daily/weekly plan of tasks to do so you stay on track.
Those three steps can get you started. They may seem simple, but in my experience, are the hardest part. Understanding our deep desires is something that others can offer suggestions, but in the end, it is up to us. Dig in and go deep. If you need help with this step, I can recommend a couple of things for you. I found the book “Strengths Finder 2.0″ by Tom Rath to be really helpful. It will ask you questions about your preferences. It is designed to help you get a clear picture of you, funny that we need help with that.

For this particular book you can’t just get it at the library. The way it works is that you read the first part of the book. Then you have to take a test on the internet. To take the test, you have to use the code they give you in the book. That code can only be used once, the cost of the test is included in the cost of the book. After you take the test (no studying involved), you will get a very detailed report with the results, be sure to print that out, you will refer to it later. Here is a link for your convienence.

The other thing you can do is take a personality test, the DISC and Meyers Briggs are both good. These tools are really beneficial to help you understand what you are inately good at. When we were younger, a lot of us got our education based on what were considered “good jobs” with little consideration for what our talents and gifts were. That might explain why some of us worked at jobs that simply provided a paycheck while envying others who loved what they did. It is never to late to do what you love, so get going.

One last thing I need to tell you all. As we go, I am going to teach you ways to earn income with your blog. That link for the book is what is called an affiliate link. If you click on that and buy the book, Amazon pays me a small percentage. It costs you no more, but Amazon gets a tiny bit less on the book because they pay their affiliates a referral fee. It is a win/win, and I want you to learn how to start making money while helping others.

How to start a family blog: Quick steps to creating your first blog

Setting up the perfect family blog is simple. Whether you are a stay at home mom or a busy Grandparent you can easily set up a blog to share special moments with families and friends. Starting a blog is free and it can be done in a few minutes. Sharing your blog with friends and family is a snap. Blogs can be shared via Facebook, Twitter, and email.  You can design your blog to share stories, pictures, and videos of your family.

The two main sites used to create blogs are WordPress and Blogger. Both sites are Internet driven and require only basic computer skills. WordPress is the latest standard for blogging. The platform provides the blog creator with various cool add-ons that are called widgets. Widgets are added to the blog through the user interface. The widgets are what make WordPress the winner and most popular of the two main blogging platforms. Therefore, I will explain the basics of setting up the blog in WordPress.

Quick 4-Step Blog Set Up:

1. Visit WordPress.com and create an account.
Once you go to the WordPress site, just click on the “Get Started Here” button and start filling out the one-step form. The first thing you’ll have to do is come up with a cleaver name for your blog. As I mentioned before, it is completely free to start a basic WordPress blog.

2. Come up with a creative name and start thinking about your content.
You can name the blog whatever you want. I suggest using something simple and easy to type. Try to avoid making the blog address too long or complex. Make it easy for your friends and family to find. Then start thinking about what type of content you want to share. You can write a simple paragraph describing your blog and include it in an “About” page. That way your readers will know where you are coming from.

3. Get started and add your first post.
Now you are moving! Once you familiarize yourself with your blog’s “dashboard,” which is basically where you, the author, will do all the behind the scenes work, it is time to write your first post. On the WordPress dashboard page, simply click the “New Post” tab to start adding content. You can add the title of the post and whatever content you choose, include text, pictures, and audio/video. When you are satisfied with your post, click the “Publish Post” button and your text will publish to your blog. It’s that simple!  Now let your friends, family, and followers know by sharing the link.

4. Let your friends and family know about the blog.
You can share your post through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Go to the blog post and click the share buttons at the bottom of the post. Another way you can share the blog post is by copying the web address and pasting the address into an email.

Doing these quick 4-steps will allow you to create your blog, add content, and share the post.

Adding content to the blog may come easy at first, but over time you may find it difficult to come up with ideas. As your blog progresses, you will need fresh ideas. Writer’s block is common so don’t worry. We have a solution. Join our weekly blog writing prompts list and get creative content ideas for your blog. What is a Blog?

following my interactions with different levels of bloggers ( newbie bloggers, intermediate bloggers, and pro bloggers), I thought to myself...

People just need an excellent guide that's simple to understand, yet adds real value.

So... let's get started!

Blogging, simply put, is a way of making an entry on a blog.  The word blog is derived from weblog, which means an online journal - a record or an entry on the web.  The term weblog was coined by Jorn Barger in 1997, while blog was coined by Peter Merholz in 1999.

Today, both noun and verb forms of the word blog are in usage.  As a verb, to blog means to make a post or edit your weblog.

The person who makes the entry on the blog is known as a blogger.  Weblogs also called blogs can be written by one or more bloggers, and the entries are basically in reverse chronological order - from the most recent to the oldest.

Blogs are updated multiple times a day, a week or a month, while others are rarely.

What makes blog different from other forms of web publishing are the personalities behind them.  They (blogs) are written by individuals (bloggers) who are perceived as 'unedited' personal voices.

Bloggers have different goals, uses, or writing styles.  Often, a blog reflects the author's personalities and values.

Writing a blog offers the author (web blogger) immediate access to readers, who are allowed to make their own comments or links to topics and other websites relevant to the entry.  This interaction allows bloggers to create a community of bloggers or blogs called blogosheres, that is, groups centered around specific niches or interests or location .  For example, medblogs (weblogs about health and medicine), edulogs (educational weblogs), blawgs (law-related weblogs),  indian bloggers, malaysian bloggers, nigerian bloggers, etc.  These uses indicate that blogs could be useful in supporting ones work.

Make Money Blogging for Beginners – The Challenges to Overcome

Let’s take a look at the different approaches in terms of Make Money Blogging for Beginners. There are 2 ways for you to basically start your blogging business. Get a domain name, find a reliable hosting, install a WordPress blog (that platform is the most recommended by the way), then start setting it up, which is – to be honest – lots of pain when you are getting started… I am aware of that myself because I’m not your typical techie guy in any way.

So at this time, you have a blog, which can be cool, however, you don’t have anything to sell as that’s the only way you are going to make money blogging… if you sell something. Now you can choose Affiliate Marketing or Network Marketing to have something to market, but again choosing the best deals takes some experience trust me! It took so long for us as well to find a Commission Loophole to get 100% Commissions, rather than getting 30-50% like in typical Affiliate and Network Marketing.

The next thing you want to have is a sales funnel to make sales and follow up with your potential customer on complete autopilot so you can start earning income on the Internet independent of your time while you sipping Pina Colada on the beach somewhere! Isn’t this what you want?

So a sales funnel that’s essential to make money blogging should contain: a Free offer (something valuable for the people that are considering the product you’re selling, and you want to give this away for Free in exchange for their contact details – this is how you create a list of subscribers that can be converted into buyers later), than what you want is a HIGH CONVERTING sales page or video which is what many people just don’t get right; this thing, CONVERSIONS will determine how many percentage of your visitors will actually buy. Obviously you want this percentage the highest possible and therefore let me kindly suggest something: you don’t want to put this together yourself when you are a beginner in the blogging arena! Instead, rely on people who have this skill.

And this will bring us to another step… the life blood of your Online Business: TRAFFIC! Traffic is everything, my friend. You may have the very best looking shiny object or product to provide, but if NO ONE sees it you won’t make a single dime, PERIOD! So have to learn how you can drive massive visitors to your blog, meaning you want to learn cutting-edge Internet Marketing strategies that are proven to work.

Let’s say you have done all this that was mentioned in this Make Money Blogging for Beginners report – let’s assume you had the time and money and the resources to put this all together as a beginner. And let’s say you are getting massive traffic to your blog and you convert them to sales like crazy.

BUT…

You are still getting this tiny, itsy, bitsy commissions for selling other people’s products rather than selling your own products. What’s the difference? Well, selling other people’s stuff is equal to a maximum of 50% commissions and selling your own product pays 100%. But you don’t have your own product, right? And to be honest as a beginner you don’t want to start creating it, because that usually happens after you achieved real results in the game (it’s like you cannot teach Muay Thai – even though I train – without achieving something and being a student myself).

You may be thinking: “is this why I was searching Make Money Blogging for Beginners information, to find this disappointing post”?

Obviously this challenging info is NOT what you were looking for when searching for “Make Money Blogging for Beginners”!
